Healthy Vegetarian Diet

Healthy Vegetarian Diet

Many people who are concerned about the environment and the ethical treatment of animals love they idea of vegetarianism because there are so many problems with the way the animals in our food supply are raised. That being said, some individuals just don't feel that great when eating a 100% vegetarian diet long-term. I personally have been a vegetarian on and off for many years. Honestly I wish I felt great on a vegetarian diet because I love animals and prefer not to eat animal foods, but I have found that I don't feel my best when eating an exculsively vegetarian diet. Perhaps this is due my blood type- I am an O type and there is evidence that blood type Os do better as carnivores. So I do eat some animal foods, generally the least amount needed for me to feel healthy...

My 10 year old son chose to become a vegetarian two years ago and while I supported and
continue to support his decision, I do not want my son to sacrifice his health for his ideals. I am, of course, determined for him to be as healthy as possible. The nutrients that are low in many vegetarian diets include protein, vitamin A, vitamin B12 and vitamin D. A vegetarian diet that is not balanced may include far too many carbs, as well, and this can lead to blood sugar problems and weight gain. I have had many patients whose health issues clearly stemmed from nutrient deficiencies brought on by not eating a healthy vegetarian diet. While I have always respected the desire behind being vegetarian, I ask people to be open-minded with foods to see what will make them feel better. Those who are unwilling to change their ways usually do not improve. Those who are open to experimenting with their diet generally fare better. Some people feel ok adding in some fish and still call themselves vegetarian. Others eat chicken every now and then. I personally consider myself a
"flexitarian", someone who eat lots of vegetarian food but who is also an occasional eater of everything else. If you do want to follow an excusively vegetarian diet, make sure to do your research and be sure you are getting all the nutrients your body needs- I believe a healthy vegetarian diet includes raw and/or cultured dairy products and healthy free-range eggs; it is also wise to supplement with fish oil and/or cod liver oil (or bend the vegetarian rules a bit and to eat some healthy fish). There is no one diet that works for everyone- do some experimentation and you'll find what works best for you.
