Pure Bar Review

Let me start off by pointing out that my love for Larabars is enormous! I obviously eat them frequently and rave about them quite a lot. And, hoestly, I never thought a bar would rival their awesomeness"¦ until now! PURE BARS give Larabars a run for their money! And because Larabars are so popular in the blogworld, I have decided to compare the two bars as part of my review.

The taste and texture of Pure Bars are a lot like Larabars"“ strong flavors of dried fruit (mostly dates) pervade the bar and the consistency is soft and chewy with subtle bites of crunch. The first Pure Bar that I tried was the Chocolate Chip Trailmix Bar, which had a nice combination of dates, apples, raisins, cashews, sunflower seeds, and almonds, which made the bar crunchy and chewy. Agave nectar adds to the sweetness. The only noticeabledifference between Pure Bars and Larabars is the shape. While Larabars are long and narrow, Pure Bars are short and more compact. And the most important part of the review: Pure Bars are delicious!

An energy bar that is organic, raw, gluten-free and delightful! Made with fruit and nuts, it is amazingly chewy and sweet.

Even in a good-sized city like Boston, Pure Bars are a little tricky to find, so I am sure in other parts of the country (and world), they may even be more difficult to track down. But, never fear, Veronica at Pure Bar has offered to give away THREE prizes"“ each of which will be filled with a mixed box of Pure Bars, some coupons, and a cute chico bag. Lots of goodies!

Here-s how to enter the giveaway:

On this post, leave me a comment telling me which flavor of Pure Bar you would most like like to try (or which flavor is your favorite) and then

Seasons and food for good health

AlÄ« ibn MÃ…«sÄ al-RidÄ was the seventh descendant of the Islamic prophet Muhammad (Pbuh). Imam a Reza was a great Scholar also. Following is a summary of his famous book the golden medical dissertation written on Seasons of year and foods for good health.

In this Book Imam (a.s) explained various seasons of the year and the food and drinks which must be used therein.

ImÄm al-RidÄ, peace be on him, has said: "Man-s body is just like a kingdom: The heart is the king of the body; the (blood) vessels,  the limbs, and the brain are workers. The house of the king is his heart; his land is the body; the helpers are his hands, his legs, his eyes, his lips, his tongues, and his ears; his storekeepers are his stomach and his abdomen; and his chamberlain is his chest. Therefore, the hands are two helpers which bring (things) near,  take (them) away, and work as the king reveals to them. The legs carry the kings wherever he likes. The eyes lead him to that which disappears from him, for the king is behind a curtain and does not reach it except through them. They are also his two lamps; they are fort and well-fortified place of the body. The ears introduce nothing to the king except that which agrees with him, for they are unable to bring in anything unless the king inspires to them. When the king inspires to them,
he keeps silent and listen to them. Then he answers whatever he likes; and the tongue explains on his behalf with many tools of which are the wind of the heart, the steam of the stomach, and the help of the two lips; and the two lips have no strength except by the means of man, and they are in need of each other

March :day and night are good; the earth becomes soft; and the power of phlegm terminates; the blood becomes excited; and one must use light food and meat; and he must refrain from eating onions and garlic and sour (things) and he must use laxative therein; and he must use therein bloodletting and cupping.

April  is thirty days; day lengthens therein; the temper of the season becomes strong, the blood moves; the east wind blows; roasted foods are used therein; what is prepared with vinegar; the meats of (birds and animals which are) hunted; drink water before breakfast; smell flowers and scent.

May  is thirty one days; the winds become clear there in, it is at the end of the season of spring, one must refrain from salty foods, think meat such as heads and beef, and yogurt; entering the bathroom at the beginning of day is useful therein; and sport before lunch is reprehensible therein.

June  is thirty days; the power of phlegm terminates therein; the time of the yellow bile comes; one must refrain from tiredness and eating abundant meat; one must smell musk and ambergris; it is useful to eat cold vegetables such as endive and purslane, to eat greens such as cucumber, purgative manna, ripe fruit, to use soured things; of the meat is goat and young goat; of the birds is chickens, dull "“ yellow partridge (tahiyujj), francolins; yogurt and fresh fish.

As for July , it is the heaviest of all the months of the year and the most harmful of them towards man. That is because of the intense heat which occurs when water goes down.al-RisÄla al-Dhahabiya fi al-Tibb

August  is thirty one days; the simoon (hot wind) becomes intense therein; cold becomes exited at night; the north wind blows; temper becomes good through patting and moistening; it is useful to drink yogurt; one must decrease sport, and smell cold flowers.

September  is thirty days; the air becomes good therein; the power of the black bile becomes strong; having laxative is good, it is useful to eat sweets and moderate various kinds of meats such as that of young goats and mutton; one use therein perfume with moderate temper, and refrain from eating melon and cucumber.

October  is thirty one days, various winds blow in it; one must breathe the east wind, avoid bloodletting and taking medicine; it is useful to have meat in spices; one must decrease drinking water; and sport is praiseworthy in it.

November  is thirty days; seasonal rains comes down in it, one must not drink water at night, take a mouthful of warm water in the early morning every day, avoid eating vegetables such as celery, mint and watercress.

December  is thirty "“ one days, storms become strong and cold becomes intense in it; it is useful to have all that which has been mentioned in November (Tishrin al-Thani); one must be cautious of having cold foods and guard against cupping and bloodletting; and he must use therein foods which are actually and potentially hot.

January  is thirty "“ one days; the power of phlegm is strong in it; one must have a mouthful of warm water before breakfast; one must have in it hot vegetables such as celery, watercress, and leek; entering the bathroom and massaging (the body) with al "“ Khayri ointment is useful in it, one must be careful of sweet things, eating fresh fish and having yogurt.

Alcohol and diabetes

Alcohol

Alcohol

Basic rules for diabetics when drinking alcohol

Follow these guidelines to avoid low blood sugar levels when you drink:

Never drink alcohol on an empty stomach. Limit yourself to 1 drink if you-re a woman or 2 drinks if you are a man. Alcohol affects your body-s ability to get over a low blood sugar level. If you have low blood sugar, you may need to treat it more than once as time goes by. If you-ve been drinking, check your blood sugar before you go to sleep. Eat a snack before you retire to avoid a low blood sugar reaction while you sleep.

A warning: glucagon shots don-t help severe low blood glucose caused by drinking. Glucagon shots treat very severe low blood glucose reactions caused by too much insulin. Glucagon works by getting your liver to release more glucose into your blood. But alcohol stops this process. You need to be able to treat your reaction with a carbohydrate, such as oral glucose tablets or gels. So you need to avoid letting a low blood glucose level become severe. If you pass out, you will need glucose injected into your bloodstream by a health care professional.

Beer Belly Blues

Although an occasional drink may not hurt your blood sugar control, it can harm your eating plan if your goal is weight loss. Two light beers equal about 200 extra calories. Alcohol is called empty calories because it does not give you any nutrients.

If you are on a low-calorie meal plan, think twice about adding alcohol.

When Alcohol Is a Poor Choice

Some people with diabetes should not drink alcohol. Alcohol can make some diabetic problems worse.

If you have nerve damage from diabetes in your arms or legs, drinking can make it worse. Alcohol is toxic to nerves. Drinking can increase the pain, burning, tingling, numbness, and other symptoms found with nerve damage. Some studies show that even regular light drinking (less than two drinks per week) can bring on nerve damage.

Heavy drinking (3 or more drinks per day) may make diabetic eye disease worse. If you have high blood pressure, you can lower it if you stop drinking alcohol.

Many people with diabetes have high levels of the fat called triglyceride in their blood. If you do, you should not drink alcohol. Alcohol affects how the liver clears fat from the blood. Alcohol also spurs the liver on to make more triglycerides. Even light drinking (two 4-ounce glasses of wine a week) can raise triglyceride levels.

Still sick

I saw the Doctor and Practitioner today. According to them, I-m still sick. I-m going to be sick, probably for a while. Some of my symptoms are chronic, meaning they could last forever, specifically the inflammation from my graft vs. host disease. I-m getting an appointment scheduled with an optometrist at Mass. Ear and Eye for the inflammation in my eyes causing grittiness, pain, and possibly visual impairments. I-m told he-s really good. I-ll take it. Everybody I have been sent to has been good so far. I mean really good, rock star, celebrity, top of their game style. I-m in good, capable hands. I-m getting my liver checked next week, sometime, at Dartmouth. My liver enzymes today were. . . . . . bad. A test for liver enzymes shows a level of breakdown happening within the organ, or simply put, failure. The enzymes include aspartate aminotransferase (AST or SGOT) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT or SGPT). These enzymes are normally contained within liver cells. If the liver
is injured, the liver cells spill the enzymes into blood, raising the enzyme levels in the blood and signaling the liver damage. If any of you are freaking out and are needing specific numbers, here it is: My AST is 98 (9-30 is normal) and my ALT 94 (Good range 7-52). My alkaline phosphatase is up. This is a blood test that measures the amount of the enzyme ALP (alkaline phosphatase). When this is present in large amounts, it may signify bone/liver disease or a tumor. Damaged or diseased tissue releases enzymes into the blood, so serum ALP measurements can be abnormal in many conditions, including bone disease and liver disease. Serum ALP is also increased in some normal circumstances (for example, during normal bone growth) or in response to a variety of drugs. Okay. Screech. Halt. Rewind. I said it. You read it. Go ahead and reread. My alk phos is 307. That could mean a tumor. It could also be a side effect of my medications or the transplant itself. What I need to immediately
stop doing is insulting my liver. I-m not talking about drinking or forcing toxins into my body. I-m saying I need to stop forcing it out. No more osteopathic/acupressure stimulation with acupuncture every other week directly targeting my liver. I-ll still get the services, but be more gentle. Definitely no more homeopathic German Bio Tinctures that none of us really understand EXACTLY what it is doing to my body, especially ones that stimulate the lymphatic system or contain low dose live viruses. No need to freak out, I never tried the live viruses. I get the rationale. It still scares me. The rationale is similar to vaccinations. You reintroduce viruses slowly into your system to gain immunity without suffering the effects of exposure. I would have taken doses that could comfortably be prescribed to a 6 month old. When I first tried this, I was given adult doses, but things have changed. I added these medications slowly, week by week, to know if something caused a reaction. I
can-t tell you if what I took catapulted my disease throughout my brand, shiny, new immune system, but if it did, I wouldn-t be any more worried than I would be with one tumor. My cancer goes away, easily. It just always comes back. It-s a ferocious, persistent little bugger, just like its host. Aunt Pauline took me to the health food store after our appointment. We had a bonding day. Pauline always has been a Grade A caretaker. The idea behind the health food : I don-t want my body to work any harder processing what I eat than it has to. Every little piece of energy that is taken away from fighting my disease to process something difficult, like grease, or molecularly altered to a naturally unrecognizable state, such as trans-fats, is lost ground in my fight against cancer. However, I need to pack in food. I am not trying to be the next America-s Top Model. I need to weigh in at more than 106 lbs. That-s a loss of 12lbs since January. It-s a loss of three lbs. since last Tues.
However, I did measure in at 166cm at the hospital, maybe I can sneak into model range height somehow. I could take up yoga and stretch myself. I-d be okay being a poster child for cancer. So at least, I got a lesson in shopping for natural foods. I-ve never been to a natural food store or co-op outside our local Granny-s Garden, which is great. I was a little overwhelmed, almost shocked into buying nothing. It was like the first time I went into a Bodega in the Bronx. It was a culture shock. There were all these foods I didn-t recognize. I wouldn-t know what to do with them. THEN I got asked if I had my mask on because I had to protect against allergies like it was COMPLETELY NORMAL. It was a signal saying "it-s-okay-to-be-an-allerginphobe-in-here." Seriously, air borne allergies to things like latex and peanuts are very scary. Those allergies kill people. I would be grocery shopping with my mask on if I had to be scared of a peanut lurking around every corner. I think I fit in
there. So, in summary of my trip, I am sick. I-m going to be watched closely. I-m going to watch myself closely. I-m going to finish the cephalosporin I-m on for my pneumonia. I am NEVER EVER going to EVER miss a dose of my Bactrim, which I haven-t, but I gave my word specifically to love and cherish this medication, which prevents against PCP pneumonia. I can use my albuterol rescue inhaler. I-m going to put drops in my eyes 4 times a day, minimum. I am NOT going to beat on my liver with hands, needles, or weird German medications, even though I think it-s one of my toughest organs and I know if I ever lost it, I could have a piece of Heather-s. I-m going to relax and eat and drink. And I-m going to get better.

America's Health

A new report Keeping America's Food Safe: A Blueprint for Fixing the Food Safety System was released by Trust for America's Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) which said immediate consolidation of food safety leadership within the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was needed.

The report released at the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services examines problems with the current system and proposes ways to improve the food safety functions to better protect the nation's food supply.

Currently the responsibility is divided among federal agencies which include the FDA and U. S. Department of Agriculture, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention monitoring disease outbreaks. The FDA regulates 80% of the food supply including millions of food producers, processors, transporters, storage facilities, grocery stores, and restaurants.

TFAH and RWJF in their report have said as a first step toward safeguarding the U. S. food supply the Obama administration should appoint a senior food safety official within the Food and Drug Administration.

"Our food safety system is plagued with problems, and it's leading to millions of Americans becoming needlessly sick each year," said Jeff Levi, PhD, Executive Director of TFAH. "The system is outdated and unable to effectively deal with today's threats. Its current structure actually prevents the kind of coordinated, focused effort that Americans need more than ever and have a right to expect."

In the long run, the groups said the government needs a new agency within the Department of Health and Human Services whose only task is regulating the food supply. As of now no FDA official whose job is food safety has line authority over all food safety aspects.

On March 14 President Barack Obama chose Dr. Margaret Hamburg to run the FDA and called for restructuring and improving the U. S. food safety system. He announced a Cabinet-level group that will provide advice on how to improve food safety.

In the report consolidating leadership within the FDA, and Congressional action to create a separate Food Safety Administration were highlighted as being immediate actions that were needed to reduce food related illness.

The current Salmonella crisis relating to peanut products is still fresh in everyone's mind, preceded by Salmonella outbreak in peppers and imported cantaloupes. There was also a near miss with the potential imports from China of the melamine-contaminated infant formula and related diary products.

"Food safety needs to be a priority on the prevention menu," said Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. "We shouldn't have to worry about our children getting sick from their school lunch or from a family meal at a restaurant. And we shouldn't have to wait until people become sick to learn about food safety problems. We need modern, comprehensive ways of preventing and detecting problems before food gets to the table."

Michael Taylor of George Washington University, who has worked in food safety posts at both the FDA and the U. S. Department of Agriculture, told reporters, "I believe the first priority should be to repair what is wrong at FDA."

Taylor, who provided advice for the report added, "The FDA has jurisdiction over 80 percent of the food supply, including virtually all imports. Recent nationwide outbreaks involving salmonella-tainted produce and peanuts expose really critical shortcomings at FDA and CDC with respect to both prevention and response to foodborne outbreaks."

Highlighting the three critical weaknesses of the FDA Taylor said the FDA has obsolete statutes that focus on reacting to problems instead of preventing them; inadequate resources that have resulted in "serious gaps in standard-setting and a weak enforcement program"; and a fragmented structure that impedes management.

Luxury as a "folly" of the fruit of Japan

Have been to Japan-s fellow citizens, tend to focus only on Japan-s fruit, vegetables expensive side, but ignoring its superior quality side. Japan-s Kobe beef, sold in New York the most expensive, but also selling extremely well, and rely on superior quality. Chinese and Japanese food consumption is the difference between: cheap Chinese food, but bad quality; Japanese food expensive, but good quality. Chinese food can meet the Chinese price, Japanese quality, the people fortunate enough to

Subject to income limitations, dietary consumption of Chinese people is still in the concept of mainstreaming Price First, the quality of the next stage. Japanese people have been accustomed to the quality of the consumer first, followed by Price-s priority selection.

For example: A few years ago, through decades of arduous negotiations, the United States imported from Japan has finally knocked on the gate of the rice market. Only Japan imports rice prices rice 1 / 5, put the Japanese rice industry was almost destroyed. not long, however, have found that after six months of imports of Japanese rice taste with their different habits and customs, in turn competing for high-priced purchase of the Inter (one kilogram of approximately 50 RMB). A result, Japan was almost out of stock rice, rice imports are substantial backlog. Forced the government decree requiring businesses can only sell "imported rice," or sell "mixed rice", can not sell rice in Japan in order to digest the import of rice, reduce the market pressure. Toss the stretch, the Japanese also return to eat the traditional Japanese rice, although the highest. Chinese rice could not enter Japan, the total was said to be barriers to trade, and its essence is not to buy Japanese
consumers. If no improvement in the quality of light to find the Japanese government ballast, not the road.

About the quality of the supremacy of the Japanese market, and pursue careers really extreme fruit. Need a strawberry, loquat can be sold three, fifty yuan, a Need for cantaloupe, watermelon can be sold three, four hundred yuan.

Dietary Fiber - For Diabetes and Heart Health General

Dietary Fiber - For Diabetes Heart And General Health

Most people understand the importance of dietary fiber in their diet. Much has been said about its importance in heart health, diabetes, cancer prevention, and even weight control.

What is less well understood is how different types of fiber effect the body. Some provide fecal bulk, some are absorbed more quickly into the blood stream than others, and thus raise blood sugar levels more quickly, and yet others provide benefits to the heart.

Thus, despite the apparent simplicity, fiber is a complex topic. And whilst all types of fiber are important, if you are looking at preventing or managing specific conditions, its not enough to just look at the total dietary fiber as written on food packaging.

Dietary fiber is broadly classified into soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber is fermented in the colon, and plays a role in slowing the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream. It also encourages the growth of the "˜friendly- bacteria that help break down bile, and are involved in the creation of B vitamins like folic acid, niacin, and pyridoxine.

Insoluble fiber, on the other hand, acts a bit like an intestinal broom. It provides bulk to the stools, and makes sure they pass through easily and quickly. This is the type of fiber that keeps you "˜regular-, not insoluble fiber.

Insoluble fiber does provide a feeling of fullness, however. This makes it great for weight loss and controlling hunger. It also keeps blood sugar levels more stable, although research into the rate at which carbohydrates enter the bloodstream have found there to be some significant differences within the foods that make up the fiber group. Dietary fiber can thus be rated by its Glycemic Index, which effectively ranks fiber foods with each other on a relative scale.

The idea is to try and include more low gylcemic index foods. Foods with a high glycemic index cause blood sugar levels to spike, providing too much energy to the blood in the form of carbohydrates, which in turn sets off the body-s sugar controlling hormone - insulin. You thus get a "˜high- followed by a sudden drop. This in turn leads the body to want more carbohydrates to balance itself again, leading to cravings and overeating, as well as tiredness and moodiness.

Low glycemic index foods include lentils, chickpeas, baked beans, fruit loaf, salmon sushi, barley, milk, low fat custard, soy milk, yoghurt (not diet yoghurt), apples, strawberries, grapes, spaghetti, peas, carrots, fructose, strawberry jam, and chocolate milk.

Moderate glycemic index foods include pea soup, rye bread, porridge, muesli, ice cream, bananas, pineapple, kiwi fruit, new potatoes, beetroot, white sugar, honey, and mars bars.

High glycemic index foods include broad beans, bagels, white bread, brown rice, watermelon, udon noodles, desiree, pontiac and sebago potatoes, and glucose.

We need both soluble and insoluble fiber, however. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that in a group of 6000 French men and women, those with the highest levels of soluble and insoluble fiber in their diet had a lower risk of being overweight, a lower risk of having blood pressure problems, cholesterol problems, and they had better levels of triacylglycerols and homocysteine. The last two are measure3 of heart health.

Come Party With Me: March Madness - Drinks

When selecting a beverage to pair with a sporting event, like a basketball tournament, beer is the first thing that comes to mind. However, I know some of the Sugar girls dislike beer, so I'm going to serve shandys.

A shandy is a British beer cocktail that combines brew with lemonade. This recipe from the current issue of Food & Wine magazine jazzes up the traditional shandy by adding in ginger. Refreshing and sparkling, this drink looks perfect for Spring.

In case guests prefer to sip something else, I'll also have chilled white wine and sparkling water. To learn how to make the ginger shandies, read more.

Does drinking green tea speed up your metabolism?

Metabolism

I drink ICED green tea everyday, so im not sure if that has the same effect as hot green tea, and does this have any effect on my metabolism? I drink it for the taste, so i actually have no idea what the health benefits of iced green tea, anyone want to fill me in? Green tea does help a person lose weight and increase metabolism rate but do not expect green tea to be a magic cure-all or a single solution product, though. Studies show that drinking a moderate amount of green tea helps to burn 80 calories a day. This may not sound like much, but 80 calories a day translates to approximately 8 pounds per year. So green tea will help you lose some weight, and over several years time this can help you live a healthier life.

Green tea contains high concentrations of catechin polyphenols. These compounds work with other chemicals to intensify levels of fat oxidation and thermogenesis, where heat is created in the body by burning fuels such as fat. Green tea also causes carbohydrates to be released slowly, preventing sharp increases in blood-insulin levels. This promotes the burning of fat.

The thermogenic effect was originally attributed to its caffeine content. However, green tea stimulates brown fat thermogenesis far greater than a comparable amount of pure caffeine. It appears that the catechin-polyphenols, in particular epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and caffeine that naturally occur in green tea work synergistically to stimulate thermogenesis and augment and prolong sympathetic stimulation of thermogenesis. It has been shown to increase 24-hour energy expenditure and fat oxidation (caffeine only increases metabolism during the time you take it).

There are also claims that green tea suppresses your appetite. This probably depends on what the green tea is replacing. Caffeine tends to cause an increase in appetite, so if green tea reduces your caffeine consumption, it might help your appetite. Also, sugar also increases appetite, because it causes insulin production, which in turn increases appetite. The sugar crash also leads people to seek more food for more energy. Therefore, if you are replacing high-caffeine, high-sugar drinks with green tea, it is likely to help decrease your appetite.

Dolce Bella Chocolates

I hadn't tried Dolce Bella Chocolates before the San Francisco Chocolate Salon, and I'm so glad I have now. As you know, I'm more of a purist when it comes to chocolate, but Audrey Vaggione's smooth ganache fillings are to die for. Dolce Bella was definitely on my scorecard at the Chocolate Salon.

Audrey Vaggione, chocolatier and pastry chef , was at the show with lots of different samples of her elegant, smooth, truffles and chocolates. She graduated from the California Culinary Academy in Baking and Pastry Arts in 2005 and, after
gaining experience in several Bay Area pastry kitchens, launched Vaggione Pastries, making custom desserts, wedding cakes, and chocolates. She found making chocolates melded her interests: growing fresh food, cooking, decorating, and science, and she soon began shipping chocolates, making them in rented space in a commercial kitchen and selling at farmers- markets. Suddenly every "for lease" sign was calling out to her and the search for her own space began. The new Dolce Bella Chocolates kitchen and store location is in Saratoga on Cox Avenue across from the garden in which Audrey grows most of the flavor ingredients in her creations. Dolce Bella Chocolates takes freshness to a whole new level. Berries, citrus, flowers, and herbs are picked the very morning, sometimes within minutes of being incorporated into cream and butter ganache and piped into a molded chocolate shell. The results are fresh flavors rarely found out of the garden.

Even traditional ingredients such as caramel are made from scratch; no extracts, preservatives, or artificial colorings are used in the making of the chocolates. Contrasting chocolate or gold luster dust, a ground mineral powder, are used for decoration.

Dolce Bella uses E-Guittard chocolate, locally made with old-world traditional methods since the 1860s.

Organize your food, recipes and ingredients with BlackBerry

Here is how shopping goes in my house: my wife asks me what I want for dinner during the week, she then takes that and creates a list, then she digs for coupons, then she starts adding stuff we don't need to the list based on the plethora of "great deals" she found while going through coupons, then she prints this list and we head out to the store only to find at the end of the trip that we're a hundred dollars over budget, which leads to her trying to convince me why we can't afford the data plan on my phone the whole way home.

I saw the feature list for Appetite by SimpleLeap Software LLC and did a little "woohoo!" inside. Appetite is a recipe/shopping manager that is so feature rich for its extremely humble price tag, that I'm going to jump right to the feature list.

Features

When you first open the app you're greeted with a menu so pleasant that momentarily makes you forget you're using your blackberry. From here you have four options to choose from: My Recipes, Get Recipes, Grocery Lists, and Ingredients.

appetite

appetite

My Recipes

This is where you go to view all your recipes or input your own. From within My Recipes you have a categorized list which you can drill into and select a recipe (i.e. Main Dish ? Bench Press Peppers.) From here you can see an overview of the entire recipe (ingredients, description, preparation, etc.), use the recipe to create a grocery list (that will show up under Grocery Lists from the main menu), view an itemized list of ingredients, or view a step-by-step preparation guide. You can also view a picture of the finished product, email the recipe, or if it's one you've added yourself you can upload it to the Appetite database! Already tried a recipe and decided you'd rather use 4tbsp of garlic instead of 3tbsp? You can modify any recipe in your database as well!

Get Recipes

From here you can choose from one of four channels (the Appetite channel having the most to choose from), search by term for all available recipes, or view a description of the available channels. Once you've loaded a channel it has the same view you're My Recipes option did: a categorized view you can drill into to view the individual recipes that fall under them. When hovered over a recipe you can view its description, rate it, or download it. One of the neat things about downloading is you're not confined to the category in which it was listed.

Grocery Lists

This is one of the most convenient functions of the application, as it allows you to create multiple grocery lists, merge list together, add pricing to items, and view lists you've created from individual recipes. You can create grocery lists directly from here, or view and modify ones you've created from a recipe. Aside from having thousands of ingredients to search from, you can also add your own, along with notes, quantities, price, and the isle the item is on. There's even a spot to check for if you have a coupon, which will add an indicator icon to the item under the list view! As you shop, you can press the scroll button to check an item off your list, which is indicated by graying it out. At the top of your list you also have a count of checked/unchecked items to track your shopping progress. As you pick up items you can input their price (things automatically have a price of $1 when first added) which will add to your total on the list view. You can also sort your
grocery lists by item or isle to avoid doubling back for something.

appetite

appetite

Ingredients

This is the place where you can add ingredients that are found elsewhere in the application. All of your ingredients fall into categories which can be viewed by clicking on them. This is also the spot where most of my minor complaints lie. While it seems all of your ingredients come from this list, the only things you can change are the name, and the category it falls under. What this means is any time you change info in another part of the application (price, isle, notes, etc.), it's back to the defaults the next time you add it to a recipe or grocery list. While I realize things like price and isle are subject to change from time to time, being able to save this info would help in budgeting before going to the store, and make adding the info feel more constructive when shopping.

Things I Would Change

When all is said and done, the pros far outweigh the cons, and there is just too much Appetite can do for you to avoid grabbing this wonderful application!

Recipe peanut butter

You must have heard the news by now that Ludy's Peanut Butter Sweet and Creamy and Ludy's Peanut Butter Spread have been pulled out of the shelves in groceries due to salmonella contamination. Even unbranded peanut butter will be tested by the FDA. Well, maybe it is time to make our own peanut butter ala Ludy-s Peanut butter way. You will need a food processor to make this peanut butter.

Ingredients

1 kilo peeled peanuts (buy them unroasted, with the peel removed. Should appear white and dry) 1 cup honey ( or 2 cups refined sugar) 1/4 cup vegetable oil (optional if sticky texture is desired) Salt to taste

(you can cut the recipe in half or 500 grams peanuts if you want to experiment this recipe)

Important: Make sure your utensils are washed properly. It is best to use hot soapy water to clean the food processor, and the kawali where peanuts are in contact with. Do the same with the mixing cups and , storage containers.

1. Heat your kawali at low heat as high heat burns the outer layer of the nuts quite fast. Make sure your kawali has a thick buttom so that the peanuts don-t burn easily.

2. Keep roasting the peanuts and stir constantly for even roasting. This may take about 15 to 20 minutes. Cool.

3. After cooling the roasted nuts, mix it with the oil and honey, and pour the mixture into the food processor. Scrape down the food processor bowl, if needed, when processing the peanuts.

4. Process the peanut mixture until it-s very smooth. Taste the freshly made peanut butter and add a touch of salt, if needed. Add more oil if needed to have desired sticky consistency.

5. Store your smooth peanut butter in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It will keep for 2 weeks.

Optional for Chunky peanut butter.

1. Set aside 1/4 cup of roasted peanuts and set aside.

2. Mix the rest of the peanuts with honey and oil, and pour the mixture into the food processor.

3. Process the mixture until it-s very smooth, then add in the peanuts that you had set aside in number 1. Scrape down the food processor bowl, if needed, when processing the peanuts.

4. Process a few more seconds to come up with the chunks in your chunky peanut butter. Taste the freshly made peanut butter and add a touch of salt, if needed.

5. Store your smooth peanut butter in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It will keep for 2 weeks.

$ 100 Gift Pack Gift no fear

Believe it or not, it's time for another contest here at BevReview.com. Recently, the kind folks at No Fear sent us the newest flavor in their energy drink lineup, No Fear Bloodshot.

No Fear Prizes
You could win all these No Fear prizes!

This rather tasty energy drink contains real sugar and a bunch of different juices, combined with a bitter-smooth orange flavor that's a good fit for those looking for a pick-me-up in the morning. Here's a look at our reviews for this and the three other available flavors:

One thing I learned about the No Fear lineup "” which incidentally is distributed by Pepsi "” is that they like to combine a uniquely bitter flavor with something of complimentary smoothness.

No Fear Bloodshot

It's an odd mashup, but for some reason, it just works, especially in the Bloodshot flavor. I really like that one (and I'm not just saying that because they sent me a free can!)

Earn Some Cred
Look under the tab to Earn Some Cred!

No Fear is currently running an interesting promotion called Earn Some Cred. Think of it as the energy drink version of Pepsi Stuff or My Coke Rewards. But what's interesting is that the codes that you redeem for prizes are actually hidden under the pull tabs. I don't think I've ever seen that before"¦ rather clever! You can redeem your points at EarnSomeCred.com"¦ or in some cases, you may be an instant winner. (I, unfortunately, was not!) This includes trips to mixed martial arts competitions with WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting), a chance to learn motocross, surfing in Hawaii, and some live music events.

But that's not the only way you can get some stuff. Thanks to the No Fear folks "” and to people like you who proved to the No Fear folks that you like getting free stuff "” BevReview.com has been provided with a gift pack valued at $100. It includes the following:

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that there's quite a bit of stuff there. Frankly, I'm a bit jealous that I have to give this away! Those hoodies look pretty comfy!

I've only got one of these gift packs, but it can be yours!

Here are the rules:

This is a great giveaway, so you won't want to miss your chance to win. Please spread the word via e-mail, Twitter, Digg, or by yelling at the person who sits next to you! Have No Fear if you want to win!

Pig Dessert: Coco Rouge Bar of Andalusia

Dessert Pig: Coco Rouge's Andalucia Bar

I am as big a fan of the bacon in dessert trend as anybody can be. I've consumed chocolate-dipped bacon from Bleeding Heart, bacon candy bars, bacon-maple cupcakes from More, bacon-fat gingersnaps, and bacon brittle; I've made bacon-fat truffles (thank you, Schwa, for giving me your recipe) and bacon baklava. The last four items in this list were all consumed at a Baconalia party.

But I have a little secret: my favorite sweet involving a pork product doesn't involve bacon at all. It involves chorizo.

Coco Rouge is already well-known for their Carnassier bar, using maple-cured bacon. I prefer their Andalucia bar, which has been out for some time, but hasn't received the same attention. The base of the bar is a bittersweet chocolate with Aleppo pepper; in the chocolate, there are bits of honey-sweet toffee studded with small morsels of chorizo. The overall effect is mostly sweet, with an occasional burst of smoky, savory sausage. The pepper used in the chocolate is a terrific counterpoint to the chorizo. I'm not sure sausage would work in many of the other desserts where bacon can be used (sausage baklava?), but in this case, the combination is perfect.

Tamra Davis Cooking Show

Today, in my GOOP newsletter, I found an online cooking show called theTamra Davis Cooking Show. Tamra Davis is a filmaker and a busy mom.

This is a great resource for people who eat meatless (many meat-free recipes) or are just looking for a way to feed their families creative healthy meals. The shows are fun to watch as they follow Tamra shopping with her cute little boys, or doing yoga while one of the boys keeps climbing on her, and then there-s the food. Yum.

Here-s the first part of a 2-part Mexican cooking show. Be sure to catch the second part, too.

I ordered a copy of Tamra Davis-s cookbook, "Make Me Something To Eat," and I-ll share my review of it with you very soon.
